Why Would They Sacrifice?

Rom 5:6  For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.Rom 5:7  For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.Rom 5:8  But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

There are many people who place themselves in harms way to protect and serve others. It’s quite amazing when one considers how many people serve in the military, are policemen, guards and first responders. They perform duties that could jeopardize their safety and lives at any given moment. When you add to these numbers those who work in the medical field and expose themselves to disease and other health hazards it becomes clear that a sizeable percentage of people spend their lives serving the good of society.

The obvious question is “why are so many willing to do this?” You need go no further than a military graveyard to realize how many have been willing to sacrifice their lives and happiness for the safety of others.  The Apostle Paul said in Romans 12:3 that God has given to every man a measure of faith. Faith is the ability to believe in that which cannot be seen or easily understood by human reasoning. The world of faith is one where powers and forces are at work that compels mankind to do that which is not always logical. Actions driven by faith sometimes defy self preservation. All of creation reflects the glory of God. This includes mankind. Even those who reject God are capable of reflecting the glory of God. Everything God created inspires us to consider the gospel of Christ.

Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice for the good of all mankind. God so loved us that He became one of us. He did this so that there could be a man who would be worthy of heaven, because this man would commit no sin. Death is the penalty for sin. It is not the penalty for being human. God was willing to suffer with us and for us. He came to us as Jesus, the savior of the world. Even though He did not sin, He was able to take the consequences and penalty of our sin. He did not commit our sins for pleasure or gratification as we do, but He took the suffering that we deserved as if though He had committed them. Man had sinned, so justice demanded that man would have to pay for those sins. He became that man. He has promised that He would give eternal life to all who would believe this miraculous story. He would give us His life and we would be born again into His family and no longer a descendant of Adam.

The question was, “why are so many willing to do this?” It is because there is a force that each of one of us possesses that reflects the faith that God has given us. Even when we do not believe we cannot help but act upon this faith. One of the saddest realities is that there have been so many who have sacrificed so much for others and yet died in their sins, having rejected Christ. Their very life purpose was a reflection of God’s provision and they didn’t see it. We need to become passionate about sharing the gospel with those who have been willing to risk so much. They need to know how much Jesus gave for them. If we are to allow another person to stand in harms way for us, we need to pray that they would be in good standing with the Lord if they should have to make the ultimate sacrifice.
